Markey and Warren Should Not Vote for Schumer

August 7, 2015 By terrymcginty

How many of you agree with me that Senators Markey and Warren should not now support Chuck Schumer for Majority Leader now that he is sabotaging President Obama’s crown jewel in his civilized foreign policy?

I wasn’t happy when I heard Schumer was going to succeed Reid. He’s a Wall Street shill and was (like Reid) a supporter of the Iraq War. He’s taken a lot of money from private prisons, and he was the one who brought Mark Warner into the leadership to “balance” Elizabeth Warren. This–although an entirely expected move from Chuck–just makes him even worse. He is undermining the ability of the president to conduct diplomacy and joining his campaign donors to do the bidding of a US client state (which, by the way, already has nuclear weapons). If the Senate Democrats had any self-respect (sadly, they so often don’t), they would not elect him as leader.

The unfortunate thing is that the next in line aren’t great either. Dick Durbin has advocated cutting Social Security, and Patty Murray never saw a corporate-written trade deal she didn’t like.

Thank you jcohn88. I had no idea that Schumer and supported private prisons. That alone is reason not to support him for majority leader.

Has anyone else expressed interest? I’d propose Warren herself.

I agree with Christopher on this one. She’s smart, savvy,
the courageous ‘liberal lioness’ of the Senate a la our beloved Ted Kennedy AND she is the Bay States ‘favorite daughter’.

I am willing to believe that Senator Chuck Schumer bailed on the Iran deal because he knows that the deal is safe and, therefore, had a free one as regards to a contentious constituent issue. But it also does mean that he shouldn’t be allowed within 20 yards of the Democratic Senate leadership.

Clearly not ours. As noted above, Chuck is a Wall Street shill who does not have the President’s back. He cannot distinguish the nation’s interest from his own parochial interests, and as a consequence he does not qualify to lead Senate Dems. MoveOn is already urging its members to withhold campaign contributions to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. As Dan Pfeiffer, a former top aide to Obama, tweeted in support of MoveOn’s effort: “The base won’t support a leader who thought Obamacare was a mistake and wants War with Iran.” Go Liz.

Not when he bails on such a key and hard vote and by doing so helps to undercut the President and the Democratic candidates for President
