We have always valued a diversity of voices here at BMG. Since the very beginning, we’ve encouraged “differently-winged” contributors to participate, believing that a variety of viewpoints makes the site a more interesting place. And since 2006, we’ve operated on a platform that allows all BMG members to write and post their own content directly to the site.
One thing that has not changed, though, is the identity of the three editors. Since day 1 of BMG, Bob, Charley, and myself have been the only ones controlling the site’s content, in the sense that what we write is always on the front page, and also that we are the ones who decide what other material should be promoted.
That changes today! We’re very pleased to announced that we have invited long-time BMGer HesterPrynne to join BMG’s editorial ranks, and that she has accepted. Henceforth, HesterPrynne is the fourth BMG “front-pager,” and she (yes, she’s a “she”) can also promote content written by others to the front page.
When Bob, Charley and I began discussing inviting a fourth editor on board, HesterPrynne was an obvious choice. As any regular reader knows, her posts are always meticulously written and researched. She writes with a strong point of view, but not in a way that dismisses legitimate counter-arguments. And she brings invaluable inside-the-building knowledge and understanding to her posts about Beacon Hill goings-on. In short, she writes great stuff that makes BMG a better place. We couldn’t be more pleased that she is joining us as an editor.
Onward!

I’m very honored to join the ranks of front-pagers. I’ll do my best to live up to the editorial and authorial talent that David, Bob and Charley have brought to this great website over the past decade.
Onward!

If you care to enlighten us I’ve been dying to know for some time why you chose as your handle the name of arguably American literature’s most notorious adultress?:)

…female protagonist would be a lot more accurate way of putting it. And perhaps goes further to understanding why one would pick that handle. Not that I would dream of speaking for HP, who will be a great addition as editor.

If this were my junior year of high school it would have been clearer since my English teacher that year didn’t let us forget that she did her own doctoral dissertation on that book.

So excited for you – and so glad that BMG has this new voice.

I’m a big fan of the mysterious HP. Her writing is always smart, incisive, etc.

So, does that mean my monthly bribe goes up 33%, or…?

Congratulations Hester!
Perhaps we should really say “Thanks!” because editing/moderating a blog is generally thankless.
Thanks also to David, Bob, and Charley for the fine choice, and their ongoing dedication to this thing.

The current 3 editors have been completely transparent about their identities.

I think that makes today a BMG Red Letter Day (looking for a suitably light-hearted pun there … 🙂 )

I hope it does, one of the few I subscribe to and regularly look forward to getting updates from.

Very happy to see this, and there isn’t a more perfect person for the job.

for the generous and welcoming comments.
To answer a couple of the questions that I have answers to, my choice of “Hester” comes from my pre-law school days as a graduate student in theology. (I was always more taken with Hester’s antinomianism than the particular form in which she expressed it, but there wouldn’t have been a novel that way.) “Hester” became a computer password of choice and was an easy choice for a BMG handle. I also once had a cocker spaniel with that name.
On the issue of pseudonymity, I totally get that there is some price to be paid in credibility. As soon as I am old enough or rich enough to retire, will ditch the mask. (And I heard that blogging is second only to hedge fund management as a path to riches, no?)

Did you run it by Mitch McConnell?

our executive authority is unchecked. So much more convenient.
