Appoint a Special Prosecutor to Investigate John Conyers and Al Franken

November 30, 2017 By petr

Letting them resign is letting them off the hook. If we want to address the problem, and if we want to address the specific problem in Congress, then appoint a special prosecutor to investigate the actions of John Conyers and Al Franken during the time they have served in Congress.

Not only does due process mean something to me …. You can’t punish someone based on an accusation, no matter that truth of that accusation or how many accusations there are… but justice won’t be served by allowing them to simply slink away, if they are guilty

Appoint a special prosecutor.

Why a special prosecutor? If a criminal case can be made, then why not just a regular prosecutor in the jurisdiction wherein the acts are alleged to have taken place?

A special prosecutor is called for because the ability of the Congress to investigate itself has been called into question…. At least in the case of Conyers, the acts are alleged to have taken place in, or related to, his position in Congress.

I didn’t say Congress should investigate, just the regular criminal justice system.

You mean the ‘regular justice system’ that is under the control of a separate branch (the executive) of the Federal Government? Under ‘regular’ circumstances only Congress can investigate Congress…. and under ‘regular’ circumstances this is a good thing, otherwise we’d have a check, and no balance, there…. The president could start investigating committee chairs as intimidation tactic over pending legislation.

But these aren’t political crimes. There just happen to be politicians allegedly committing them in this case. I’m just calling for the same authorities who would prosecute them if they held any other job in the same jurisdiction to do so in this case.
