Genuinely Undecided About 2020

October 6, 2018 By jconway

Every primary cycle I’ve been old enough to have an informed opinion, I pick a standard bearer early and stick with him. First was Bradley/McCain in 2000, then Dean in 2004, then Obama which was my first vote and first real campaign across multiple states. Then in 2016 my refrain “Bernie in the primary, Hillary in the general”. Though things got heated at times, I’m proud of both votes.

I have no idea this year which is an interesting place to be. Obviously we need to flipcongress first. Yet by the start of the 2020 I’ll be settled in as a teacher in Revere, out of grad school, and ready to go to work for someone. I just have no idea who he or she will be yet.

There’s absolutely no need to decide now. There’s only one declared candidate now anyway and he’s not likely to get very far. Of the ones publicly considering it if I had to choose I might say Biden, but I expect a crowded field. Even MA has three possible candidates by my count who have not issued Shermanesque denials (Warren, Patrick, Kerry). Of the names I’ve seen nobody really gets my blood flowing, but nobody would be a deal-breaker as the nominee either. I don’t know when I will finally get over that Hillary will likely never have the chance she so deserved the country so needed.

While I respect all the names you mention, and Bernie, I am hoping for a new face. Open to an old one, but more open to a new one. The biggest litmus test for me is who can beat Trump. I think he will be more formidable than we bargain for.

See to me, new and presidency don’t belong in the same sentence. The highest office in the land should be for someone with experience and gravitas. While I would not go as far as requiring a certain cursus honorum a la the Roman Republic I think new people ought to work their way through Congress or state government.

I won’t support any of the following in the primary:

    1. Elizabeth Warren
    2. Deval Patrick
    3. John Kerry
    4. Joe Biden
    5. Bernie Sanders
    6. Hillary Clinton

I’m sick to death of the same-old same old faces.

I have no clue what the 2020 election will look like. Michael Moore doubts that it will even happen. There is some chance that the incumbent will be Mike Pence. There is some chance that he will commit the same political suicide that ended Gerald Ford’s administration and issue pardon(s) to Donald Trump et al. There is also some chance that by 2020 the Trumpists will be steamrolling us even further down the sewer.

I like some of the new faces. I am surprised by how much I like the posturing of Mr. Avenatti, even though I don’t consider him a credible candidate. If I had to vote in a primary today, I’d pick him over any of the six I enumerated above.

I like Cory Booker. I like Kamalla Harris. I like Kirsten Gillebrand.

At the moment, I’m more concerned with what happens in November and with whether or not we find a way to get Mr. Trump and the GOP Collaborators out of power before they do even more damage.

No need for paranoia. Absent a meteorite hitting the earth and sending us the way of the dinosaurs, the 2020 election absolutely will happen.

Yeah I’ll echo Christopher on this one. These kinds of rumors circulate on the net and are not helpful at allaying the fears many of my students have about what’s coming down the pike. They also serves to depress minority turnout and may even be generated by the other side or Russia. I get that was not the intention and the fear of the dangerous radicalism of this presidency is genuine and not at all unfounded, but we have the tools to fight back. We just need to use them while we can.

“When they go low, we hit harder” is a hell of a slogan, that’s for sure.

Beto O’Rourke is another charismatic figure who knows how to sell progressive policy to conservative voters. I hope he pulls off the upset in Texas and have happily donated to him. Andrew Gillum and Stacey Abrams are both very impressive candidates too. They gotta win in 2018 first though!
