“We now have a presidency where the president has delivered the largest economic recovery plan since Roosevelt, the largest infrastructure plan since Eisenhower, the most judges confirmed since Kennedy, the second largest health care bill since Johnson, and the largest climate change bill in history…The first time we’ve done gun control since President Clinton was here, the first time ever an African American woman has been on the Supreme Court…I think it’s a record to take to the American people.” White House Chief of Staff Ron Klein

You know I have to ask this:
What sway does any of this have for the independent voter? Yes, for the rank and file Democrats, all good. Maybe a mention of some of the actual infrastructure projects, with pickup trucks in the background…a shot of grandma and grandpa leaving the drug store with a smile on their face…and a few pics of kids in school, not hiding under desks and behind closed doors..

Sway? This isn’t about sway. This is about government doing what is right for ALL Americans, regardless of party,

Is it right for all Americans to pay excessive taxes, and college fees, to underwrite the very real businesses that are the NCAA and so on? Is it right that we put so much weight on athletics for certain sports in higher learning?

Yet another diatribe against Democrats and higher education?

This comment is disconnected from the reality of everything it mentions.

Higher education receives a tiny fraction of the excessive taxes paid by all Americans. The abuses associated with the NCAA are largely caused by the resulting reliance of colleges and universities on NCAA income — a reliance that is made worse by the reduction of federal support for higher education.

Any American that is appalled by the unholy connection between football, basketball, the NCAA, and higher education should correctly be demanding that America increase, rather than decrease, public funding for higher education.

It is disingenuous to simultaneously attack higher education for being overly dependent on football and baseball and also attack programs that increase public support for higher education.

The thread-starter highlights seven significant accomplishments of Joe Biden and the Democratic Party.

This thread starts with classic concern-trolling — “What sway does any of this have for the independent voter” — and degenerates into yet another repetition of the groundless attacks on higher education and Democrats.

Omar to Democrats: ‘Let’s Give Working Folks a Reason to Turn Out to Vote for Us’
“For every moderate suburban Republican, there are line cooks, homeworkers, dishwashers, cashiers, farmworkers who would vote a straight Democratic ticket if they were given a reason to.”

I like what she has to say here, but isn’t she also one of the reasons we have less to run on because her ilk insisted on shooting for the moon and prevented us from accomplishing at least something?

Can anyone point me to a Republican who ran on a moderate platform and did not “shoot for the moon” in the current GOP? Has Marjorie Taylor Greene and her ilk prevented anything that the Trump White House wanted to accomplish?
I just don’t think there are that many moderates out there. I will say there are a lot of undecided who we label as moderates but my hunch is that they can be swayed by a leader with passion. Omar is such a person, but so is MTG.

I reject the unspoken assumption that we should use the current GOP as a model for anything.

Democrats are not criminals. Democrats do not own a bought-and-paid-for propaganda network.

Democrats are not violently threatening, attacking, and killing law enforcement officials, election workers, judges, governors, and public officials.

No other president of either party has stolen dozens of boxes containing hundreds of extremely sensitive documents.

The current GOP is a criminal enterprise that is leading an ongoing violent insurrection.

Democrats should not seek to emulate their behavior or methods.

                  August 23, 2022 at 7:04 pm

I don’t necessarily mind shooting for the moon as an opening bid. On the merits I agreed with the Progressive Caucus’s policy proposals. What bothered me is when it was clear the bolder agenda didn’t have the votes, they held hostage a less ambitious but more politically doable alternative. I believe Omar was one of those who voted against that not because she thought it was a step in the wrong direction, but because she couldn’t get everything she wanted right this second – toddler behavior IMO.

Domestic terrorists, insurrection enthusiasts, election denier traitors, neo-fascist billionaires, and corrupt criminals now control the ‘IDIOT CLOWNCAR’ movement–formerly known as the party of Lincoln.

      August 24, 2022 at 9:56 am

According to Eric Trump, and who am I to argue with a man of such intellect, “There’s no question. I mean, it’s not even the Republican Party. I’d say it’s actually the Trump party,”
We can laugh and mock that reality. We can dismiss them as domestic terrorists, insurrection enthusiasts, election denier traitors, neo-fascist billionaires, and corrupt criminals (all true by the way.
The question I have is this: how do we deal with this new reality? They might very well control the House of Representatives in a few months. They have managed to take control of the Supreme Court, and not just with the latest tree judges. Let’s not forget Gini Thomas, an unapologetic MAGA supporter of the insurrection who seems to have full control of her husband.
We can’t shout them down. We can’t compromise with them. We can’t reason with them.
      Can we outvote them?

          Agreed.
I have a question for you Tom.
At the end of the Civil War, should President Lincoln arrested, fined, and jailed all the Confederate soldiers that survived? Was his Proclamation of Amnesty and Reconstruction too lenient ?

          • SomervilleTom says

            August 25, 2022 at 12:28 pm

I don’t know, I’ll defer the answer of that question to our historians.

So far as I know, no president before Donald Trump has acted on behalf of a hostile nation.

The successful intervention of Vladimir Putin in the 2016 election and subsequently in today’s GOP is unprecedented in US history, so far as I know.

Today’s situation is very different from Mr. Lincoln’s.

I’m not comparing Trump to Robert E. Lee or Stonewall Jackson, although I’m certain Mr. Trump would be flattered. I speaking of the foot soldiers and their families and the many but not all of the 74,223,369 Americans who voted for Trump in 2020. Can the Democratic Party afford to write them all off as the enemy?

Can the PUKE Party afford to write off all the 81,000,000 Americans who voted for Biden and WON the election.

                  August 26, 2022 at 8:41 am

No, of course not. I’ll remind you that today, on Morning Joe, the most recent Emerson poll had Biden and Trump in a virtual tie for 2024.
If you are comfortable with that and think we can squeak another one by in two years, well, I’d sleep easier if we had a bit more of a lead and the best way to achieve that is to take votes from Trump.

                August 26, 2022 at 12:35 pm

The DoJ should aggressively investigate, prosecute, convict, and punish every person who commits crimes against America.

I’m not sure what portion of the 74,223,369 Americans who voted for Trump in 2020 that constitutes.

How many of those 74,223,369 Americans support and encourage the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol? How many of those Americans support the multitude of state and federal crimes that the GOP committed after the 2020 election? If your answer to that is “all of them”, then that answer itself is a more damning condemnation of those Americans than any commentary I might offer here.

No political party should embrace, encourage, pander to, or allow contributions from criminals — particularly criminals who seek to destroy representative democracy itself and also the rule of law.

Right on, Tom! ” They (MAGATS) refuse to accept the will of the people, don’t believe in democracy.” President Joe Biden 8/25/2020

We can correctly prosecute the GOP as a criminal enterprise and domestic terrorist organization.

We can make it illegal to contribute money to them.

The very existence of America is at stake. We can do all the things America has done before when we’ve had to protect the nation itself.

      • SomervilleTom says

        August 24, 2022 at 6:26 pm

Correctly describing them as “insurrectionists”, “seditionists”, “criminals”, “domestic terrorists” and so on is not “dismissing” them.

Those who have perpetrated criminal acts must be prosecuted, convicted, and punished for those crimes.

  4. fredrichlariccia says

    August 26, 2022 at 12:27 pm

That’s the point! That same poll showed Biden had a 9-point advantage over the PUKE with INDEPENDENTS.

    • SomervilleTom says

      August 26, 2022 at 12:52 pm

Convicting the criminals who are dominating the GOP with compelling and well-documented proof of their crimes is a very effective way of taking votes from Donald Trump.

If Donald Trump has been convicted for multiple state and federal felonies, he is not eligible to be on the ballot in most states. That is an effective way of taking votes from Donald Trump.

If the GOP and Fox News are unable to continue using lies to fraudulently raise money, then that is yet another way of taking votes from Donald Trump.

The role of Donald Trump and high-ranking GOP officials in multiple state and federal crimes is a legal, rather than political, question. It is legal question that is best answered in the legal system, rather than on any ballot.

The basketball court is not an appropriate way to deal with a basketball team who bribes referees and wounds fellow athletes with concealed weapons
