March 13, 2011 By massparent 26 Comments

A NY Times Op-Ed by Nicholas Kristof advocates for increasing teacher compensation, in order to compete with other countries by attracting more talented people into the profession as other high performing countries such as Singapore … [Read more...]

Health care reform – what’s not to like?

July 20, 2009 By massparent 6 Comments

I've been suprised by the lack of interest in health care reform this summer, with a real possibility for an initiative to break new ground.   There just doesn't seem to be a groundswell of interest. To me, the prospect of ever … [Read more...]

An unspeasant change in the bailout formula.

September 19, 2008 By massparent 11 Comments

The logic is that the bailouts to date have set up short sellers to know where to look for the next victim, sort of a domino theory of busted equity corporations.  This probably has some merit. However, if the formula shifts so that … [Read more...]

John McCain's message of the day is regarding Barack Obama's "poor judgment" regarding his relationship with Freddie Mac's CEO. Back in the day, John McCain got off easy for his close relationship with Charles Keating, when he was only … [Read more...]

251 school districts aid increased.

April 5, 2007 By massparent 9 Comments

But the legislature could have kept aid to every district at the higher of the governor's numbers or last year's downpayment formula's numbers, at a cost of just $15 million above the governor's budget.  This means the cuts for 101 … [Read more...]

“Baseline” Chapter 70 funding increase.

March 26, 2007 By massparent 7 Comments

Digging a step deeper, I find that the 43% of municipalities receiving an increase in the baseline spreadsheet account for 55% of the foundation budget.  So, another guess at baseline that covers every school district, rather than 43% … [Read more...]

When Scott Brown won in January 2010, Alan Khazei told us, “you can’t read too much into it. It’s a special election!”

Bad result but good to keep in mind.

Looks like JEFF TURCO wins the race to replace former House Speaker Robert DeLeo in the 19th Suffolk District. JUAN PABLO JARAMILLO comes in second by just under 300 votes.

Yikes.

Adam Bass@AdamBassWCCS

The idea of a Pro Life Trump supporter winning Suffolk 19 is not out of the ordinary. Winthrop is particular is much more right leaning that Revere. And Revere got severely out voted. When Capobianco had his story, that left you with two progressives. #mapoli

.@CDCgov dir. @RWalensky, once part of MA's #COVID19 advsy board, said

"Now is not the time to relax the critical safeguards that we know can stop the spread of COVID-19 ... not when we are so close."

But @MassGovernor pushes to reopen.

Who is advising Gov. Baker now?

It's time to state outright that Charlie Baker's science advisory team is the Chamber of Commerce. That's why we were slow to act last year, why our public health network got ignored on vaccines & why our reopenings have flown in the face of data, expert advice & common sense. https://twitter.com/MikeConnollyMA/status/1366423893276303364

Just reiterating my COVID philosophy: Instead of bucking advice from the CDC and Dr. Fauci (by further reopening the Mass. economy), we should #TaxTheRich and use the new revenue to provide cash relief to people in need and small businesses while also investing in health equity.
